6.2 Do
It's time to delve into your project. Start by doing the research necessary to make your strategic decisions:
- Find competitors and tear down their products
- Conduct a SWOT analysis of the market
- Complete a market sizing exercise to estimate the total addressable market for the product (including user count and possible revenue)
- Conduct your user research—interview or observe at least three people who use (or would use) the product
Make sure to save all your work—take detailed notes at each step, use an appropriate type of file for each item (such as slide decks, word-processing documents, or PDFs), and keep each deliverable organized so you can find it later. You'll want to refer to these documents and summarize your findings when you put together your presentation.
Your interviews/observations should ideally be in person, but you can also use video conferencing (such as Hangouts or Facetime) or a phone call. Try to record them if you can. If you plan on recording, remember to first ask your interviewees' permission to record them.
Capstone
Summarize your research in a document you can share later. It should include the following:
- Competitive analysis teardowns
- Your SWOT analysis
- Your market sizing estimates and the underlying work to calculate it
- A summary of each interview/observation and a combined summary of your findings
